Amazighe is the most ancient language of the Maghreb. The arrival of Amazigh to Morocco goes back to the Neolithic era. For historians, their origin remains a subject of controversy. They could be natives, come from the north shore of the Mediterranean, or come from the south of the Arab Peninsula.
Synonymous with refinement and richness, Moroccan handicraft is the expression of a millennium civilization which makes it a reference in the world. The profusion of the typically Moroccan handicraft expressions reflects the genius and know-how of Moroccans, their attachment to their culture and their openness to the artistic patterns and motifs, to the extent that they add a universal dimension to their local works of art.
The history of Morocco grew rich by the influences of several civilizations and cultures.The plurality of these civilizations resulted in a significant archaeological diversification which was translated throughout the Moroccan territory into monuments, buildings and vestiges.
Folklore, the art of peoples, is the reflection par excellence of their culture, customs and traditions. An art through which one can discover the various aspects of the civilization of humanity and the evolution of the nations’ life.
Traditionally rich and varied - variety of materials, forms and colours expressing the art of draped clothing - the Moroccan suit for both men and women varies according to the local cultures of every region and every social group.
If the dramatic art, in its modern form, was introduced into Morocco until the beginning of the 1920s when nationalists created the first theatrical companies: in Tangier (company of Mohamed Ben Zakour), In Fez (company of Mohamed Al Qorri) and in Rabat (company of Mohamed Al Yazidi), different forms of theatrical expression, however, existed beforehand in the Moroccan culture and were the essence of the performing art the way it had been previously performed in the country.
Two main features characterize the contemporary Moroccan literature. First, it is a bilingual literature since it is expressed both in Arabic and French. Second, although it is young- hardly 70 years of existence – it went through the three essential stages inherent to any literary evolution, namely the period of birth and initiation, that of institution and finally that of modernization.
Shortly after the introduction into Morocco of the first camera in 1907 by Felix Mesguich, the machine of the colonial film gave birth, since1919, to the first fiction movie on the colonial inspiration in Morocco. "Mektoub" was realized by J. Pinchon and Daniel Quenton. Several tens of full-length movies were filmed between the two wars and during the Protectorate.
Universally known to be one of the rare cuisines which knew how to preserve the authenticity of dishes and recipes, the Moroccan cuisine, having existed for more than 2000 years, includes sweet and salty food cooked in three ways: Mkalli (fried), Mhammar (roast) and méchoui (barbecued).
A cultural and artistic meeting place, Morocco offers its know-how to any human creativity celebrated regularly during the holding of festivals dedicated to the various modes of expression.
The history of sports in Morocco did not start with the independence of the country. It goes back to the colonial time (French Protectorate: 1912-1956) when an armada of high-level Moroccan athletes operating in France, accomplished glorious achievements with French clubs in different disciplines.
