Algeria should commit to negotiations to search for political solution to Sahara issue

Algeria should seriously commit to talks aimed at facilitating the search for a political solution to the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, in accordance with UNSC resolution 1979, State Seretary to the Foreign Minister, Latifa Akharbach, underlined on Wednesday in Nusa Dua (Bali) in Indonesia.

Speaking at the Non Aligned Movement's 16th ministerial conference, which runs until May 27, Akharbach said that Algeria's return to supporting the referendum option is itself a maneuver as the UN had confirmed, over ten years ago, that the referendum is an absolute and unworkabe option and urged all the parties to engage in serious and intensive negotiations to reach a political solution while respecting consensus and realism.

She recalled the major role played by the Non Aligned Movement throughout its history in terms of promoting world peace and security through attachment to principles of the Bandung conference namely respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity, fighting racism and racial segregation, rejecting the policy of blocs and abstaining from the use of arrangements of collective defence to serve any particular interests of the big powers.

She added that Morocco deems that strengthening the movement and its negotiation capacities hinges on harmonizing its agenda with international priorities.
