Constitutional reforms contribute to consolidating democracy, human rights: political actors say
Istiqlal Party's Secretary General, Abbas El Fas  Several heads of political parties and unions said, on Thursday in Rabat, that the constitutional reforms, announced by HM King Mohammed VI, will contribute to consolidating democracy and human rights.

These statements were made on the sidelines of their participation in the second meeting of the political mechanism in charge of ensuring the monitoring, consultation and exchange of views regarding the constitutional reforms.

Istiqlal Party's Secretary General, Abbas El Fassi, said that Mohamed Moatassim, Adviser to HM the King and Chairman of the Mechanism, gave during the meeting a presentation on some measures taken by the Sovereign, notably the royal pardon for several prisoners, reforms to involve mediation bodies such as the Competition Council, the Central Agency for the Prevention of Corruption, the Mediator Institution and the National Human Rights Council.

El Fassi added that these reforms will strengthen the rule of law and human rights in Morocco, adding that he proposed to the Advisory Committee for the Revision of the Constitution to take into consideration all the common points in the memoranda submitted by the political parties before the Committee.

For his part, Secretary General of the Popular Movement party Mohand Laenser said that the meeting is “exceptional” as it coincides with the royal decision to pardon several detainees, noting that the political parties’ proposals share many common points, which will likely to facilitate the development of a constitution draft.

Secretary General of the Progress and Socialism Party Nabil Benabdallah pointed out that the advisory Committee presented to participants the results of its work, saying that “things are going in the right direction” in the context of a deep democratic dynamism” and initiatives aimed at establishing a national dialogue on the future Constitution.

The Secretary General of the Moroccan Labour Union (UMT) Miloudi Moukharik noted that the Committee's work respects so far proposals of all stakeholders, noting that his Union proposes the involvement of other bodies in this process, including those representing the Moroccans living abroad and the Amazigh component.

The Union, he added, intends to present before the Committee a memorandum which includes the final socio-economic constitutional reforms.
