HM The King Enquires about Program to Develop Pastures, Livestock Farming in Jerada Province

HM King Mohammed VI enquired, Thursday in Ain Bni Mathar city (eastern province of Jerada), about the program to develop pastures and livestock farming, worth 36 million dirhams ($ 4.1 million).

This four-year program (2010-2013), which will be implemented as part of Morocco's Green Plan, aims at boosting the livestock sector, which is one of the main economic activities in the province of Jerada.
The project is primarily meant to improve the conditions for feeding livestock through the development of pasture on some 1400 ha and the planting of forage shrubs (1,250 ha), in addition to the construction of several water facilities to collect rainwater and underground water.
The project also includes the genetic improvement of goats through the vaccination of livestock against intestinal poisoning (440,000 vaccinations per year) and internal and external parasites (1.32 million vaccinations per year).
The complementary programme to promote pastures and livestock farming aspires to increase meat production from 2,200 tonnes to 3,000 tons per year and contribute to the preservation of 2,000 jobs.
At the same occasion, explanations were provided to HM the King on several projects in the field of pastures’ development and livestock’s promotion in the province of Jerada, worth 62.6 million dirhams.
Some 3,500 farmers have benefited from these projects, which cover an area of 590,000 ha.
These projects include the restoration of pastures through the development of grazing reserves (113,440 ha), planting fodder shrubs (5,250 ha) and seeding pastures (3,200 ha).
