Madrid is willing to provide explanations to Morocco on Spanish police behaviour
Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero

Spain said on Tuesday that its relations with Morocco have "priority" and it is willing to provide explanations to the Moroccan government on the behaviour of its police towards Moroccan and Sub-Saharan nationals at the crossing point of the Moroccan, Spanish-occupied, city of Melilia.

Spain proposes to Morocco "clarification, dialogue, and information" on this behaviour, Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero told the press following a meeting with King Juan Carlos.

"Both Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos and Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba are endeavoring to inform Rabat of these acts (...) to avoid that such an incident affects relations between the two neighboring countries," he said in a statement reported by Spanish media.

Zapatero said that "Morocco is a neighboring country with which we share many interests and joint actions," adding that bilateral ties will endure.

Morocco called upon Spain, on Monday, to provide accurate answers on the different cases of racist abuses committed by members of the Spanish police and security services against Moroccan nationals at the crossing point of Melilia.

The Kingdom of Morocco is very surprised to see that no official answer was given, to date, by the Spanish authorities on the different cases of racist abuses perpetrated by members of the Spanish police and security services against Moroccan nationals, as well as sub-Saharans, a statement by the Foreign Ministry said.
