Moroccan model of regionalization, part of decentralized democratic state - official says

Omar Azziman, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Regionalisation

The Moroccan model of advanced regionalization is clearly part of the decentralized, democratic state and marks a quantum leap in the process of democratizing society, said Monday in Rabat Omar Azziman, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Regionalisation.

The new concept of regionalization requires elected local government with democratic legitimacy and necessary mechanisms that can strengthen the participation of citizens in managing public affairs, Azziman told a press conference, devoted to the presentation of the report on advanced regionalization submitted to HM King Mohammed VI.

This initiative requires attributing decision-making and extended executive powers to regional councils so that they can fulfill their role in good way, he added, stressing the importance of establishing monitoring and accounting mechanisms to restore public confidence in institutions.

The role of the region would contribute effectively to economic, political, social, cultural and environmental development, he said, explaining that advanced regionalization cannot be achieved without mobilizing new resources, upgrading human resources and establishing funds for financial support to reduce disparities between regions.
