Morocco has always been respectful of the non-proliferation treaties and has adhered to Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials as well as other agreements, Benkhadra told MAP following her participation in the two-day Washington summit.
The minister said Morocco considers nuclear proliferation and terrorism as a "real threat" to world peace and stability, adding that the international community should adhere to an action plan adopted by the Washington summit.
On the sidelines of the summit, Benkhadra held a meeting with US under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs, Ellen Tauscher, during which the US official called on Morocco to join the initiatives aimed to fight nuclear proliferation.
The two parties also discussed issues relating to economic and political relations between the USA and Morocco.
In the final communiqué of the summit, world leaders affirmed that nuclear material should be kept from terrorists, that they should work together to safeguard such material, and that the United Nations has a central role to play in overseeing nuclear weapons safety, among other points.
The document also encourages participating countries to join international efforts to restrict the exchange of nuclear material, and directs nations to make new investments in nuclear security measures.
