El Fassi, who addressed the opening ceremony of the 16th session of the Moroccan-Tunisian joint committee, underlined that the reinvigouration of the AMU structures will contribute to establishing peace and stability in the Maghreb and the entire region.
The AMU groups Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. It was created in 1989 but has stumbled ever since.
El Fassi also expressed Morocco's "firm and sincere" commitment to reaching a "true, realistic political solution to the artificial regional conflict over the Moroccan Sahara."
In this regard, El Fassi said Morocco’s initiative to grant wide-ranging autonomy to the Southern Provinces, the Sahara, under the Kingdom’s territorial integrity is in line with the UN Security Council resolutions which has described this initiative as “serious and credible”.
He praised the excellent level of coordination and consultation between Morocco and Tunisia in international forums.
The official called for stronger coordination between the Maghreb countries as well as for overcoming “artificial” barriers, warning against dangers of terrorism, illegal immigration and trafficking which beset the region.
