Morocco 'Firmly Committed' to Negotiations Process to Solve Sahara Issue

Morocco remains "firmly committed" to the process of negotiations to find a solution to the Sahara issue on "the basic of parameters and guidelines of the recent UN Security Council resolutions," Prime Minister Abbas El Fassi said on Wednesday in Marrakech.

Speaking at the 11th Moroccan-Portuguese High Joint Commission, Abbas El Fassi said that the autonomy proposal for the southern provinces was described by the various UN resolutions as "serious and credible" to move forward towards a solution of this regional dispute.
He stressed that the Moroccan proposal was behind the launch, in 2007, of the Manhasset negotiations, under the UN auspices.
Morocco welcomed the adoption by the Security Council, on April 30, of Resolution 1920 which "welcomes the serious and credible efforts made by the Kingdom to move forward towards a solution of this regional dispute” and calls for “substantive negotiations on the basis of realism and a spirit of compromise, while taking into account the efforts made since 2006,” the Premier said.
The 11th Moroccan-Portuguese High Joint Commission opened on Wednesday under co-chairmanship of Abbas El Fassi and his Portuguese peer, Jose Socrates.
