Morocco 'a strategic partner' for Council of Europe, President of Parliamentary Assembly of CE

Morocco is a strategic partner for the Council of Europe (CE) and plays an important role in preserving the region's stability, President of the CE's Parliamentary Assembly, Mevlut Cavusoglu, said on Tuesday in Rabat.

Cavusoglu said at a press conference that Morocco is distinguished by its closeness to Europe and openness on the world, and shares with Europe the values of tolerance and democracy.

He said that his meetings with the Moroccan officials were an occasion to go through the common challenges of sustainable development, the fight against terrorism, illegal immigration and cross-border crime.

Cavusoglu, who lauded reforms undertaken by Morocco over the past decade, underlined that the promotion of cooperation between the north African country and the CE on the democratization process and human rights will expand the scope of the Advanced Status granted by the EU to Morocco.

"Our main goal is that Morocco obtains a partner for democracy status with the Assembly in order to give momentum to cooperation," he added.

Mevlut Cavusoglu is currently is Morocco to draw a report on the Morocco’s demand to be given the status of a partner for democracy with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
