"No steps were known to have been taken by the polisario Front to address the impunity of those accused of committing human rights abuses in the camps in the 1970s and 1980s," said the human rights watchdog’s 2010 annual report presented at a press briefing in Rabat.
Head of the AI's Moroccan branch Mohamed Sektaoui highlighted that entering the Algerian territory is made difficult due to the lack of cooperation by Algerian officials. He also stressed their unwillingness to bring human rights abusers to the justice.
The AI’s report on the human rights situation in the MENA region denounces the many human-rights breaches occurring in Algeria.
“People suspected of terrorism-related activities were arrested and detained incommunicado; some faced unfair trials. The Algerian authorities harassed human rights defenders, lawyers and journalists, and prosecuted some for criticizing government officials,” said the report, adding that the authorities again took no action to investigate thousands of cases of enforced disappearance and other grave abuses committed in the past and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Member of the executive committee of AI-Morocco Hassan Saaf said that when it comes to making a difference, the victims of the Israeli attack on the Gaza-bound fleet of freedom are a force to be reckoned with, hailing the bravery, commitment and resolve of human rights activists all over the world.
