President of Spanish Government Arrives in Morocco
President of the Spanish government, Mariano Rajoy, arrived on Wednesday in Rabat on an official visit to Morocco, the first to a foreign country since he took office.

The first trip abroad by the Prime Minister, following a tradition established by his predecessors, confirms that Spain wants its relations with Morocco to have a strategic aspect.

The visit shows also the interest Spanish officials take in the region, and which seeks to strengthen the political and socio-economic ties with the neighboring countries.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Saad-Eddine El Othmani asserted in a statement to the Spanish news agency EFE, that the visit paid by the Spanish Chief Executive opens up “great prospects” as far as the bilateral economic, political and cultural relations.

The consolidation of cooperation with Spain will be at the heart of the Moroccan government’s action in foreign policy, said Foreign Minister Saad Eddine El Othmani.

The visit of the Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, reflects the "strong commitment" of the two countries to strengthen their bilateral relations, said Minister of Communication, Government spokesman, Mustafa El Khalfi.

Furthermore, Mr. El Khalfi, asserted in a statement to the Spanish news agency "EFE", that the visit of the Spanish Chief Executive reflects "the commitment that drives the two countries to work jointly in order to strengthen political and economic relations and consolidate the gains".

On the other hand, according to the vice president and spokesperson for the Spanish government, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, Rajoy's visit to Morocco reflects both countries’ determination’ to boost relations as well as to foster bilateral cooperation.

The statement underlined that the event takes place in a very special political context for both countries: the large-scale political reforms undertaken by Morocco, which were launched by the constitution’s reform and culminated with the legislative elections dated November 25, and the advent of a new Spanish government following the November 20 legislative elections.

During this visit, Mariano Rajoy will tackle with the Moroccan officials the current political issues, at the bilateral and international levels."Concerning relations between the EU and Morocco, the PM will reaffirm his stance on Morocco as a key partner of the EU and that the advanced status granted to Morocco offers advantageous opportunities for everybody," it stated.

Issues pertaining to the Middle East and North Africa should be given priority. "This exchange is particularly relevant given that Morocco holds the position of non-permanent member of the Security Council of the UN", Madrid press releases.
