"King Mohamed VI promised comprehensive reforms that would guarantee free parliamentary elections, create an independent judiciary, and assure that human rights are upheld for all," it said in a fact sheet issued on the occasion of President Barack Obama's speech on US policy in the Middle East and North Africa.
In this connection, it pointed out that that the Kingdom "has made significant achievements in the economic, social, and political realms, and can demonstrate its regional leadership by pursuing further democratic reforms."
The United States, it went on, "values Morocco as a strategic partner" and "will work with the people and government of Morocco to realize their democratic aspirations."
Earlier in the day, the State Department had said that "the United States supports Morocco's efforts to promote ongoing democratic development through constitutional, judicial, and political reforms."
