  UN High Commissioner for Human Rights commends HM the King for announcing constitutional reforms
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanitheme Pillay, welcomed the constitutional reforms announced by HM King Mohammed VI in a speech to the nation on March 9.
 

 In a letter sent to Morocco's permanent representative to the UN office at Geneva, Ambassador Omar Hilale, Pillay commended HM King Mohammed VI for the recent initiatives to reinforce institutions and democratic principles.

In this respect, the UN official took note of the royal initiative to revise the constitution, elevate the judiciary to an independent power, reinforce the parliament and parties action and separate powers.

As for promoting cultural and linguistic diversity of Morocco, Pillay hailed the measures taken to recognize the Amazigh component of the Moroccan identity.

She also welcomed the setting up on March 3, of The National Human Rights Council, an independent institution that builds on the achievements of its predecessor, the Advisory Council on Human Rights.
