Sahara issue : Ban Ki-moon calls for new round of negotiations

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on Monday in New York, for a 5th round of negotiations on the Sahara "as soon as possible," and expressed his "deep concern" about the situation of the population sequestered in the Tindouf camps.

"The 5th round of negotiations should start as soon as possible" because "we need to make progress" in talks, UN Secretary General said at his monthly press conference at the UN headquarters, stressing the need to create a climate conducive to the resumption of negotiations.
"We need to create some political confidence among the parties concerned," he said, adding that the UN should do more to revive the political process.
"I will continue to promote the process of negotiations on the Sahara," Ban went on to say, describing as "encouraging" the informal meeting, held in Vienna last August.
“We really need to build up on that,” he added.
Last Friday, Moroccan Foreign Minister Taib Fassi Fihri reiterated, following a meeting at the UN Secretary General, "Morocco's full commitment to reach a political solution based on the resolutions of the UN Security Council, and calling for substantive negotiations and a realist approach."
