Mechanism for monitoring, consultation on proposed constitutional reform holds first meeting

The political mechanism for monitoring, consultation and exchange of views regarding the proposed constitutional reform, held Monday at the Royal Cabinet in Rabat, its first meeting with the participation of heads of political parties and trade unions to examine a roadmap of this mechanism in accordance with the Royal instructions, included in the two Royal Speeches of 9 and 10 March 2011.

A statement from leaders of political parties and trade unions, who participated in the meeting, said that the chairman of the political mechanism, Mohamed Moatassim, recalled the content of these two important Speeches.

He added that the mechanism will deeply review the constitution on the basis of a participatory and concerted approach adopted in previous reforms initiated by HM King Mohammed VI, including the Family Code, Morocco’s autonomy initiative and the justice and reconciliation committee, in addition to other bold initiatives that are supported nationally and internationally.

Chairman of the Advisory Committee on constitutional reform, Abdeltif Menouni, gave on this occasion a presentation on the preliminary proceedings of the Committee.

During this meeting, it was agreed that the political mechanism, as a space open to constructive and responsible debate, will hold regular meetings for consultation and exchange of views on the proposals of the advisory committee for the revision of the constitution within deadlines set by HM the King, to submit proposed amended Constitution in June.
