Algeria's Rigid Stance on Self-determination Principle Cannot Conceal Rights Abuses in Tindouf
Algeria's rigid stance regarding the self-determination principle cannot conceal the grave human rights abuses committed against the Moroccan population held against their will in the Tindouf camps (southwest of Algeria), Morocco's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva Omar Hilale said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the 14th session of UN Human Rights Council, the Moroccan diplomat stressed that this stance should not be an excuse to threaten Morocco’s unity, stability and territorial integrity.

He added that it is unacceptable to use this principle to hold captive not only the Tindouf camps' population, but also the economic and political development as well as the integration of the Maghreb region.

The international law of human rights and the UN practice give great importance to the respect of the principles of equality, universality, indivisibility and interdependence of all human rights, he recalled.

Hilale also noted that the achievements made at the international level to promote and protect human rights is the fruit of the international community’s sincere and determined commitment to foster peace, security, settlement of political conflicts, and the international action in favour of development.

He said that in the current international law, autonomy is the most modern and democratic form of self-determination, adding that its implementation enabled the settlement of several conflicts in the world.
