HM King Mohammed VI orders urgent appraisal of old mosques

Following the collapse of the minaret of Bab Berdieyinne mosque in Meknes, HM King Mohammed VI gave instructions to conduct an urgent appraisal of all Morocco's old mosques, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday.

To this end, committees, composed of local authorities' representatives, Islamic Affairs ministry officials, engineers and experts, will be set up in different Moroccan provinces with the aim of carrying out urgent appraisals of old mosques, the ministry said in a statement.

On Friday, the four-century old minaret of Bab Berdieyinne mosque collapsed during the weekly Friday prayer, killing 41 and injuring 75 others, official sources said.
