African Diplomatic Corps Distances Itself from Algerian FM's 'Incomprehensible' Statements Against Morocco

The African diplomatic corps in Rabat distanced itself from the Algerian foreign minister's insolent and incomprehensible statements against Morocco which do nothing but poison the situation.

"Heads of African countries' missions took note, with astonishment, of these statements (by the Algerian foreign minister) which stem from the most official voice of Algerian authorities," said ambassador Nimaga Ismaila, doyen of the African diplomatic corps, on behalf of African ambassadors in Rabat.

In a statement to MAP on the sidelines of information meetings held, Saturday, by the ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation on Morocco and its African policy, ambassador Ismaila regretted that such statements "do nothing but poison the situation."

The doyen of the African diplomatic corps termed as "insolent" the fact that the Algerian minister attributed these statements to African heads of states. Ambassador Ismaila said that African leaders will soon meet in Addis Ababa and require explanations over their implication in such a thing.

Ambassador Ismaila said that these statements are incomprehensible all the more so because, within the African Union, African heads of states unanimously hailed the return of Morocco, or rather the regularization of its situation, because the Kingdom has never really left its family.

He also underlined the coincidence between the Algerian foreign minister's statements and the tour in the region by UNSG personal envoy for the Sahara.

"The UNSG personal envoy for the Sahara will be an eye-witness of the party that could hamper his actions," he added.

According to ambassador Ismail, these untimely statements take place at a time "when all influential powers have recognized and supported Morocco's vision on the Sahara issue, by admitting that this is the most credible and reasonable proposal".

On behalf of all African ambassadors in Rabat, the doyen stressed that "the Moroccan people, united behind HM the King, have always advocated the path of talks and we encourage them to continue doing so."

The doyen assured that Morocco's African policy is doing well, lauding the Kingdom's insight and commitment to unite the continent.

He concluded by saying that African heads of states pin their hopes that Morocco's return to the AU will contribute to building the union's capacities on the long run so that Africa remains united.
