Ceremony pays tribute to Abderrahmane El Youssoufi on the occasion of the publication of his memoirs
A ceremony honouring former Prime Minister Abderrahmane El Youssoufi was held on Thursday in Rabat on the occasion of the publication of his memoirs.
The ceremony, which began with the national anthem, was attended by HM the King’s advisors André Azoulay and Abdellatif Menouni, as well as ministers, MPs, diplomats and representatives of civil society.
The three parts of this book, compiled by M'barek Bouderka, “provide the opportunity to recall our national values and the lessons we have learned from the activism of several generations of Moroccans since the creation of the national movement in the 1930s," El Youssoufi pointed out on this occasion.
“These values are basic to the building of Morocco, the Morocco of freedoms, democracy and institutions, as well as to the defence of our territorial integrity under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI”, said the former Prime minister, who celebrated, on Thursday, his 94th birthday.
The book looks back at a political experience from different perspectives, including at the time of resistance against the occupation as well as following the country’s independence at both the opposition and the government levels, he went on.
For his part, M'Barek Bouderka said that this book, which features El Youssoufi's speeches and interviews, reflects the ideological and political orientations of El Youssoufi.
Former Spanish Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez said that El Youssoufi is a “great resistant” who had campaigned for independence, democracy, social justice and the territorial integrity of his country.
He also underlined the importance of El Youssoufi’s memoirs in building a better future.
The former Algerian Foreign minister Lakhdar Brahimi said he shared with El Youssoufi the concerns of the Maghreb project that is still possible, as well as the Palestinian cause which must remain a top priority, adding that this ceremony is an opportunity to rally around El Youssoufi and continue the path towards the Maghreb construction.
This book includes rich historical truths about Morocco, as well as about the struggle of the Maghreb people marked by successes but also failures, Brahimi said.
He also praised El Youssoufi's qualities, his loyalty to his homeland and his friends and his unwavering commitment to the Maghreb.
