Environment Deterioration Cost Study Shows Positive Impact of Environment Action in Morocco, Official

The results of a study on the evaluation of cost of environment deterioration testifies to the positive impact of measures taken by Morocco to reinforce environment action, said, on Friday in Rabat, secretary of state for sustainable development Nezha El Ouafi.

Chairing a workshop on the results of the said study, carried out by the state secretariat for sustainable development and the world bank and which shows a cost of 33 billion dirhams in 2014, that is 3.52% of GDP, El Ouafi recalled that the first study, conducted in 1995, had evaluated a cost of 20 billion dirhams, which equalled at the time 8.2% of the GDP.

Since then, the Ministry has elaborated a comprehensive strategy for the dynamic management of environment without compromising the development effort made by Morocco to meet the economic and social needs of the population, she said.

This strategy aims at strengthening the national legal framework and making it more efficient by speeding up the process of examining and adopting environmental legislation and accelerating environment upgrading programs, she noted.

The objectives of this strategy are to put in place economic and financial instruments in order to attract additional financial resources necessary for public or private projects for environment protection, she added.
