Morocco Stresses Need for Joint Action in Elaborating Arab Social Charter

President of Social, Economic and Environmental Council (CESE) Nizar Baraka underscored, on Monday in Rabat, the need for joint action in the process of elaborating an Arab Social Charter that meets the aspirations of Arab peoples to development and dignified living conditions.

araka made the statement at a press briefing following a meeting in Rabat that ended with the announcement to create a league of Arab social and economic councils and similar institutions.

During the meeting, Baraka said that the league will play a leading role in promoting participatory democracy and diffusing conflict between the different actors in society.

League of Arab Economic and Social Councils set up in Rabat

The League of Arab economic and social councils and similar bodies was set up, on Tuesday in Rabat, to institutionalize the social dialogue in order to achieve a balanced economic and social development.

The Rabat Statement, which was signed by representatives of Arab delegations from Palestine, Mauritania, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan, Egypt, Yemen, Algeria and Morocco, as well as by the director of the Arab Labor Organization, is meant to help face economic challenges and crises and reinforce cooperation between the said Arab councils.

This statement comes to reinforce the provisions of the Declaration of Principles on social dialogue by the Arab Labor Organization and the Riyadh Declaration (Feb. 2014) issued at the 2nd Arab Development and Employment Forum which insist on the importance to establish and revive Arab countries' economic councils to foster social dialogue nationally and increase Arab participation internationally, in addition to UN conventions provisions.
