MAP Forum: Former Communication Minister Stresses Importance of Media in Consolidating Morocco's Democratic Transition
The acceleration of the democratic transition process will be possible if the efforts of all powers are combined, including the media, said, Tuesday in Rabat, former minister of Communication and government spokesman Khalid Naciri. Naciri, who was the guest of MAP Forum on the theme "the media, a counter-power or just power", held in commemoration of MAP's 60th anniversary, considered that the media acts as political power although it is positioned outside the scope of the three executive, legislative and judicial powers. It is similar in influence to an indirect political actor with an undeniable impact that goes beyond that of the three traditional powers, he added. The influence of the media, Naciri said, generally consists in shaping and guiding public opinion, a role now described as the "fifth power" that illustrates its decisive vocation in societal dynamics as an emanation of the democratization process of the press. "Believing in the role of the media implies the need to promote freedom of expression," he pointed out, stressing that the Kingdom's context of openness in the media landscape predisposes it to interact with the different approaches and developments that are occurring in this sector. MAP forum offers a venue for debating and interacting with decision-makers and experts. It brings together, in addition to journalists, representatives from ministerial departments and figures from a wide array of fields.
