Morocco posted a major reduction in the maternal mortality rate of 35% compared to 2010, said, on Wednesday in Rabat, health minister Houcine El Ouardi.

A survey including 121,725 households in 12 regions (urban and rural zones) showed an important reduction in the ratio of maternal mortality in Morocco, which dropped to 72.6 mother deaths for 100,000 live births, versus 112 in 2010, that is a reduction of 35%, said El Ouardi at a press conference with national media outlets.

Urban and rural areas showed a real improvement, with a reduction of 39% in urban areas and 25% in rural ones, he said.

According to the Minister, these figures are revealed in the 6th National Population and Family Health Survey-2017, led by the health ministry in coordination with the High Planning Commission (HCP), the World Health Organization Health (WHO), the UNICEF, the UNFPA and the League of Arab States.

El Ouardi also noted that infant mortality has also declined significantly from 47 infant deaths per 100,000 live births in 2010 to 30.5 in 2014, noting that a new figure will be revealed soon after the completion of the study under way.
