MEDays2018: ECOWAS Parliament Speaker Reaffirms his Support for Morocco's Accession
Speaker of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Moustapha Cissé Lo reaffirmed, on Wednesday in Tangier, his determination and commitment to support Morocco's membership application.
"The ECOWAS Parliament, whose fourth legislature I have the honor to preside over, has repeatedly expressed its support for Morocco's accession to ECOWAS. I therefore reaffirm here our determination and commitment to always work together with the Moroccan Parliament to support any integration initiative with a view to creating a prosperous, secure and open regional space for all," said Cissé Lo at a workshop on "Morocco in ECOWAS: the Foundations of Morocco's west African vocation", held as part of the MEDays ECOWAS Initiative.
Morocco is a major country, which must be counted on to build a greater regional political and economic power, capable of having a greater impact in international negotiations, he said.
"We should build a strong partnership (…) to significantly improve the destiny of our peoples," said Cissé Lo, noting that the regional integration process consists of creating a free trade area and a customs union, in addition to a common market and a monetary and economic union.
Organized as part of the 11th edition of the MEDays international Forum, the MEDays ECOWAS Initiative brings together more than twenty personalities representing the different ECOWAS countries.
