Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly advocates adoption of efficient counterterrorism laws

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) is collaborating with the UN and the EU to promote the adoption of efficient laws against terrorism, Upper House Speaker Mohamed Cheikh Biadillah said on Monday in Hanoi.

"We are engaged in collaboration with the UN and the EU to promote the adoption by all the states of the region of efficient laws to combat terrorism and ensure the primacy  of law notably in terms of parliamentary supervision of national security services," Biadillah said in an address to the 132nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union  (IPU) in Hanoi.

The PAM is also working on other major issues, such as climate change, protection of cultural heritage and archaeological sites, said Biadillah.

PAM is also endeavouring together with the UN, EU and Arab league and other international parliaments to facilitate the coherence and efficiency of strategies aiming at promoting peace and security in the euro-Mediterranean area, added Biadillah.

Biadillah pointed out to the new challenges facing the euro-mediterranean region notably in the wake of the armed conflicts and economic crisis in addition to the challenges pertaining to the surge in terrorist activities.

"The consequence of this violence is the massive exodus of threatened population," deplored Biadillah, saying that thousands of families including children and aged people are forced to flee their homes to unknown destiny.
