Moroccan Habib El Malki New AIPU President

Speaker of the house of representatives (lower house) Habib El Malki was appointed as new president of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU), on Tuesday in Rabat, during the closing session of the Union 24th conference.

This appointment was announced following the two-day meeting to replace Nabih Berri, speaker of the Lebanese parliament, whose mandate has ended.

In a speech on the occasion, El Malki thanked all Arab MPs attending the event for their trust and spirit of consultation.

He also affirmed the presence of a joint will to find solutions to the situation taking place in the Arab Word in a spirit of collective responsibility.

The AIPU is an Arab parliamentary organization composed of parliamentary groups representing Arab Parliaments. It was born in the wake of the October war of 1974, as a result of the atmosphere of Arab solidarity and Arab joint action, which encouraged Arab cooperation through political, professional and other institutions.
