Moroccan Sahara: UNSC Resolution Supports Morocco's Achievements in UN Mediation Process

The new resolution on the Moroccan Sahara, adopted unanimously Tuesday by the United Nations Security Council, supports Morocco's achievements in the UN mediation process and reaffirms the regional dimension of the dispute, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation said Tuesday.

Through Resolution No. 2218, "the Security Council responds, in the clearest way, to the agitations and chimeras maintained throughout the year by the other parties on a possible reorientation of the negotiation process", the ministry said in a statement.

In fact, "the new resolution supports Morocco's achievements in the UN mediation process, reaffirms the regional dimension of the dispute and confirms the approach of the Security Council with regard to its human and humanitarian dimension, the statement added.

Thus, "the Security Council reiterates its appreciation to the ‘serious and credible efforts’ made by Morocco, through the Moroccan autonomy Initiative, to move towards a political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara'' and reiterates "its call for negotiations based on realism and the spirit of compromise", the same source noted.

The resolution also underlines the regional dimension of the dispute, calling on neighboring countries, notably Algeria, to "cooperate more fully with the United Nations'' and ''engage more decisively to end the current impasse and move forward towards a political solution. ''

The ministry also noted that the Security Council recognizes that "the political solution to this long-standing dispute and the strengthening of cooperation between the member states of the Arab Maghreb Union would contribute to promote stability and security in the Sahel region. ''

On the human and humanitarian dimension of the dispute, the resolution calls upon Algeria, for the 3rd consecutive year, ''to make efforts'' to facilitate the identification and registration of the populations in Tindouf camps, in accordance with its international obligations.

The Security Council hails Morocco's approach to strengthening the role of national human rights institutions, throughout the national territory, including the Sahara, supplemented by the constructive interaction with special UN procedures, the statement added.

Thus, the UN executive body recognizes and hails the "recent actions and initiatives taken by Morocco to strengthen the committees of the National Human Rights Council in Laayoune and Dakhla and the ongoing interaction of Morocco with the special procedures of the United Nations Human Rights Council", the ministry said.

"The Kingdom will continue its involvement in the UN-led process to reach a final political solution to this regional dispute, under Moroccan sovereignty and in accordance with the Royal Speech of 6 November and the terms of the phone conversation between HM King Mohammed VI and UN Secretary-General", the same source added.
