Morocco, Ivory Coast Pledge to Develop Parliamentary Cooperation

Speaker of the House of Representatives (lower house), Habib El Malki, and speaker of the National Assembly of Ivory Coast, Amadou Soumahoro, agreed on Wednesday to develop cooperation between the two legislative institutions.

During talks held in in Rabat, the two sides welcomed the strength and depth of bilateral relations and pledged to develop coordination and consultation to serve the common interests of the two countries.

El Malki highlighted, on this occasion, the excellent historical relations between Morocco and Ivory Coast, noting that the heads of state of the two countries share the same vision on South-South cooperation and joint African action, said a statement from the lower house.

El Malki, who commended the consistent position of Ivory Coast supporting Morocco's territorial integrity, said that Ivory Coast has always been on the side of Morocco on the Moroccan Sahara issue.

Regarding parliamentary cooperation, he said that the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Morocco's House of Representatives and Ivory Coast's National Assembly reflects the determination to develop parliamentary cooperation.

El Malki also underlined the important role of the parliamentary friendship group in raising awareness of the potential of both countries and exploring new areas of cooperation.

For his part, Soumahoro hailed the progress achieved by Morocco under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, noting that the strong friendship between the heads of state of the two countries has reinforced relations between Morocco and Ivory Coast.

Morocco is among Ivory Coast's most important economic partners, he said, adding that the signing of a cooperation agreement between the two legislative institutions opens up new perspectives in terms of addressing several issues, including climate change, illegal immigration, terrorism, youth unemployment and the fight against poverty.

At the end of their talks, the two officials signed a cooperation agreement on the participation of the House of Representatives in the development of bilateral political, economic, cultural and scientific relations.

The agreement also focuses on strengthening consultations and the exchange of visits between members of the parliamentary friendship group, as well as on coordinating positions within international institutions.
