Morocco Reaffirms Pledge To Share Experience And Know-How To Help African Countries Sustain Food Security

Morocco remains committed to share with African countries its know-how and expertise in the implementation of ambitious actions geared to achieve lasting food security, said here on Monday Morocco's minister of agriculture and sea fisheries, Aziz Akhannouch.

In a meeting held by Morocco at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the sidelines of the 149th session of the UN Agency council, the minister said South-South cooperation in agriculture could considerably alleviate the agriculture bill, surveying south-south cooperation actions undertaken by Morocco and the FAO for Africa.

In addition to bilateral programs, Morocco is conducting a rich and varied tri-partite cooperation together with the FAO and other African countries, such as Burkina Faso, Niger, central African Republic and Djibouti, said Akhannouch who recalled the inception of a fund, under a framework agreement signed with the FAO last April, to help African countries sustainably increase farming production and improve competitiveness.

The meeting also looked into Morocco's Green Plan and its impact on the daily life of small farmers and women in rural areas.

The green plan is considered by the FAO as a model of agriculture development and an "important source of inspiration" for the development of food security in Africa.

The UN Food and agriculture Organization awarded on Monday to Morocco a prize in recognition for its "remarkable progress" in fighting hunger, ahead of the UN Millennium Objectives for development deadlines.

The prize was handed to Morocco's minister of agriculture and sea fisheries, Aziz Akhannouch, during an official ceremony held at the FAO head office in Rome under the chairmanship of FAO Director General, José Graziano da Silva.

Morocco was prized for reducing under-nutrition prevalence from 6.7 pc in 1990-92 to less than 5 pc in 2011-2013. In the same period, the number of under-nourished people went down from 1.7 million to 1.6 million.
