Morocco is a pioneer African country in human rights, French member of the European Parliament (MEP) Rachida Dati said.

"In the field of human rights, I consider Morocco as a truly pioneer country in Africa," said Dati in an interview with MAP.

She stressed that Morocco’s progress is evidenced by numerous achievements, such as the setting up of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission in 2004, the Development Plan for the Southern Provinces, the Economic, Social and Environment Council and the Central Authority for the Prevention of Corruption.

The French MEP noted that the election of Morocco by a large majority to the UN Human Rights Council represents an international recognition of Morocco’s commitments to promoting human rights.

Dati, a former French Justice Minister, also highlighted that the multiple reforms launched in Morocco mirror the vision of HM King Mohammed VI, before welcoming the holding in Marrakech of the Second World Human Rights Forum which, she said, mirrors Morocco’s willingness to have an open dialogue on human rights’ issues with International bodies and organisations.

Dati further denounced some MEPs who criticize Morocco's human rights record, noting that such hostile stands against the Kingdom are politically motivated.

"Despite the isolated voices criticizing Morocco, I am convinced that, on the whole, the European parliament hopes to make headway in its relations with Morocco, a privileged partner of the European Union," she highlighted.
