Morocco, Thailand Urged to Tap Potential of Strategic Locations, Thai PM

Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-O-Cha called, on Wednesday in Bangkok, for boosting bilateral cooperation between his country and Morocco to tap the potential of their strategic positions in Asia and Africa.

"Our two countries are distinguished by strategic positions on two continents. With an effective and multifaceted cooperation, Morocco will be the gateway to Africa for Thailand that will offer, in turn, access to the Asian continent", said Prayut in a meeting with Speaker of the House of Representatives Habib El Malki, on the sidelines of his participation in the 40th General Assembly of ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Assembly (AIPA).

The two countries will soon celebrate the 35th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, said Prayut, welcoming the excellent political relations and cordial exchanges between the royal families of the two countries.

He also underlined that trade remains limited while the potential for cooperation is enormous, recalling that many cooperation agreements have been concluded between the two countries and that others are being finalized.

Regarding economy, Prayut called for giving momentum to the Moroccan-Thai Business Council, considering that this is the most appropriate mechanism to involve the private sectors in the two countries and develop trade.

"Morocco is a major exporter of phosphates and agriculture is Thailand's main economic pillar, so the potential for trade is huge," he said.

Prayut also called for exploring opportunities for cooperation in the tourism sector and in maritime trade.

Concerning training, the Prime Minister recalled the memorandum of understanding signed on July 2, 2018, under the commission for cooperation in the field of education.

He thanked Morocco for the scholarships granted to Thai students, calling for extending this scholarship offer to scientific and technical branches. Prayut also hailed the agreement between the two countries on religious training in the Mohammed VI Imam Training Institute.

To achieve the objectives of this cooperation, the contribution of parliamentary diplomacy is of great value, Prayut said, calling on the legislative institutions of both countries to multiply initiatives.

El Malki, who was accompanied by Morocco's Ambassador in Bangkok Abdelilah El Housni, hailed the excellent relations between the two countries and congratulated Thailand on two major events: the coronation of King of Thailand RamaX and the success of elections that resulted in the formation of a new government.

El Malki highlighted the political and economic similarities between the two Kingdoms that encourage the emergence of a mutually beneficial cooperation with remarkable potential in various sectors.
