Morocco, UN Women sign agreement on gender mainstreaming in water sector

The Ministry delegate for energy, mining, water and environment, in charge of water, and the UN Women signed, on Friday in Rabat, an agreement to elaborate a strategy for the institutionalization of gender mainstreaming in the water sector.

"This much-awaited project seeks to institutionalize the culture and principles of gender equality in a strategic sector for the country and the human being," said Charafat Afilal, minister delegate for energy, mining, water and environment, in charge of water, adding that through this agreement, the ministry will support the gender approach integration in the water sector in a general way and not only in the integrated management of water resources.

Afilal said that the agreement coincides with three main events, namely the celebration of the International Women's Day, the World Water Day and the adoption by the government of a draft law on the authority on equality and the fight against all forms of discrimination.

The issue of equality has become a constitutional matter and we should apply in public policies, she noted.

UN Women representative for the Maghreb Leila Rhiwi said that this partnership embodies Morocco's steadfast involvement in the protection and the promotion of women's rights, adding that this agreement is part of the 2014-2016 UN Women strategy.
