Morocco’s FM Holds Talks with Spanish Peer

Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar met, on Monday in Barcelona, with his Spanish counterpart José Luis Garcia Margallo at the latters request.

During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting on the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP), Mezouar extended Morocco’s condolences on the death of the Spanish cavers  in Morocco.

The talks between the two officials tackled a range of issues pertaining to Moroccan-Spanish relations and the means to further bolster and safeguard them against any attempt at undermining them.

Following the talks, Mezouar spoke to the press about the case that is more akin to absurdity. He said the the judicial decision against 11 Moroccan citizens is "fabricated" and raises events pertaining to a more than four-decade long armed conflict taking place in a particular context that has been examined by the equity and reconciliation committee that looked into this era and proceeded to reparation.

The Minister described this judicial decision as a scheme aiming at undermining Moroccan-Spanish relations.

On the Sahara issue, Mezouar expressed satisfaction at the development of the issue as well as Morocco’s trust in the UN, the Security Council and the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General in order to find a political solution to the artificial conflict over Morocco’s territorial integrity.

Mezouar highlighted the pertinence of the autonomy plan as a realistic win-win solution that will preserve the region’s stability, making it clear that Morocco will not accept that its citizens remain held forever in Tindouf camps.
