Morocco’s Multidimensional Experience in Fighting Terrorism & Extremism Highlighted in Washington

Secretary of state for foreign affairs Mounia Boucetta highlighted on Friday in Washington Morocco’s multidimensional experience in the fight against terrorism and the prevention of extremism and radicalization.

Speaking at the Ministerial on Trade, Security and Governance in Africa, Boucetta said that Morocco's approach is based on "the conviction that there can be no lasting peace and stability without security, economic prosperity, inclusive human development and authentic religious cultural values.”

Under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, Morocco launched the National Initiative for Human Development in order to reduce social inequalities, she added at this meeting held in the presence of Morocco’s ambassador to the US, Lalla Joumala Alaoui.

This initiative has supported the development of nearly 42,000 projects with benefited 10 million people with a global investment of nearly $ 4 billion, she pointed out.

In the religious field, Morocco has adopted several measures aimed at combating the different forms of extremism and promoting the values of moderation and tolerance, including the creation of the Mohammed VI Foundation for African Ulema, whose main objective is to coordinate the efforts of Muslim ulama in order to promote tolerance, Boucetta noted.

The Kingdom also reinforced its legislation to prevent the use of the Internet for terrorist purposes, she said.

Boucetta also shed light on Morocco’s fight against radicalization in prisons, through the training of prison staffs and actions aimed at improving re-integration into the society, as well as efforts made to fight money laundering and terrorist financing.

She also underscored the importance of Morocco’s cooperation with several neighbouring countries in the fight against terrorism through the exchange of information, and underlined the need for a broader international and regional collaboration in this area.

At this meeting, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson hosted the discussions with foreign ministers or their representatives from the African continent, including the African Union Commission Chairman.

The discussions were based on three themes: trade and investment, security, and good governance.

According to the US department of State, this meeting will advance the U.S. agenda, working with African partners, to promote a shared commitment to open markets; free and fair trade; democracy and the rule of law; and effective responses to global terrorist threats.
