Morocco's request to join ECOWAS: FM Hands over Message of HM the King to President of Niger

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Salaheddine Mezouar, was received on Monday in Niamey by the President of the Republic of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou.

On this occasion, Mezouar handed over to the Nigerien President a message from HM the King on Morocco's request to join the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

President Issoufou expressed his full support to HM the king’s request, Mezouar told MAP, adding that the Nigerien head of state noted that ECOWAS is "a natural space for Morocco, given the historical and friendly relations maintained by the Kingdom with the countries of the region, but also with regard to the initiatives and actions undertaken by HM the King and by Morocco in favor of this space.”

The integration of Morocco into the ECOWAS family will have an important added value on economic integration and the strengthening of security and stability, as well as on the human development in the region, he added, noting that this integration will also support development projects and help to address the development challenges in the region.

The Nigerien President, who reiterated his full support to HM the King, seized this opportunity to hail the sovereign’s action in favor of the development and the stability of Africa in general and the region in particular.

During the meeting, Mezouar and the Nigerien President discussed several issues, including the mission entrusted to the Head of State of Niger by his peers at the African Summit of Action chaired by HM King Mohammed VI, relating to sustainable development and the fight against climate change in the Sahel region.

Other issues were discussed during the meeting, including development programs and projects aiming at fighting desertification, the development of clean energy and the strengthening of trading links between the different countries of the region, Mezouar said.
