Sahara: CELAC Reaffirms its 'Strong Support' to UN Efforts Aimed at Reaching Political Solution

The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) reaffirmed, Monday before the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, its "strong support" to the UN efforts aimed at reaching "a fair, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution" to the Sahara issue.

CELAC "continues to strongly support the efforts of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to reach a fair, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution" to the Sahara issue, said Ruben Armando Escalante, Ambassador of El Salvador to the United Nations, on behalf of the CELAC countries.

"In this regard and in the light of the four rounds of informal negotiations and meetings held so far, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States hopes that multilateral efforts to promote deeper negotiations between the parties will continue under the auspices of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, in accordance with international law and with the relevant Security Council resolutions (...) aimed at reaching a final solution to this long-standing conflict," Escalante pointed out.

CELAC is a regional bloc of Latin American and Caribbean states that consists of 33 sovereign countries.
