Saudi Arabia Rejects Any Attack on Morocco's Supreme Interests, Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its rejection of any attack on Morocco's supreme interests, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Speaking, on Monday in New York at the 24th commission of the UN General Assembly, Saudi diplomat Faycel Bin Nacer El Hekbani stressed that the sister country of Morocco has contributed with seriousness and good faith to the efforts made under the United Nations exclusive auspices to find a durable solution to the Sahara issue, said Saudi news agency (SPA).

El Hekbani reiterated his country's support for Morocco's efforts to find a solution to this regional conflict, stressing the importance of showing realism and a spirit of consensus between all parties involved.

He added that the settlement of this issue requires a climate of serenity, reaffirming in this regard the position of principle of Saudi Arabia in support of the Moroccan autonomy proposal.

This initiative guarantees for the inhabitants of the southern provinces their status and role, without distinction or exclusion, as well as their effective participation in the economic, social and cultural development of the country without discrimination, while taking into account the particularities of the Sahara region and in accordance with international standards, he stressed.

The autonomy initiative is a consensual solution in line with international law, the UN Charter, and resolutions by the Security Council and the General Assembly, said the Saudi diplomat, noting that this proposal meets the principle of self-determination.

El Hekbani commended efforts of the Moroccan government to achieve economic and social development in its southern provinces, while welcoming the development plan launched by Morocco in the Sahara in 2015 with a budget of $ 8 billion for improving the living conditions of the local population.

He added that Saudi Arabia lauds Morocco's important achievements in the field of human rights and its interaction with international human rights mechanisms, as well as the role by the regional committees of the National Human Rights Council in Laayoune and Dakhla, which was hailed by the Security Council in all its resolutions, notably resolution 2468.

The Saudi diplomat hailed efforts of the UN Secretary-General to resume political negotiations in accordance with the parameters set by the Security Council since 2007, notably resolution 2468 adopted on April 30, 2019, which underlines the need for a political, realistic and durable solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue on the basis of consensus.
