Spain Stresses Importance of Cooperation with Morocco to Fight Illegal Immigration
Spanish Secretary of State for Security Ana Botella stressed, Tuesday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the importance of cooperation with Morocco in the fight against illegal immigration.
Because of its proximity, Morocco is one of the "most important" countries for Spain in this area, noted Botella during a press conference on the occasion of a visit to the center of illegal immigration surveillance coordination in the Canary Islands.
The two countries have held several meetings in this regard, the Spanish official said, noting that this collaboration resulted in the increase of the number of interceptions, in the sea, of inflatable boats carrying illegal migrants.
She also noted that both Morocco and Spain are suffering from the consequences of the change in the route of illegal immigration towards the western Mediterranean.
"Morocco suffers from this change of route in the same way as Spain," said Botella, noting that this is a "situation that is not easy" for both countries.
She added that the fight against illegal immigration is not confined to security alone, hence the importance of Europe's collaboration, international cooperation and investment in the countries of origin to prevent the populations from leaving.
