World Top Container Ports: Tanger Med, Largest Container Port in Africa

Tanger Med is the largest container port in Africa and ranks 45th in the world, according to the latest ranking of World Top Container Ports issued by the specialised magazine "Container Management".

With a capacity of 3 million containers, Tanger Med 1 Port handled 3,312,409 TEUs in 2017, Tanger Med Port Authority said in a release. TEU measures a ship’s cargo carrying capacity, and the measurement is equivalent to 20 feet in length and 8 feet in height.

This performance enabled Tanger Med Port to move up by 6 spots in 2017 and to rank 45th in the world.

It is also the largest container port in Africa, ahead of Egypt's Port Said (52nd) and South Africa's Durban (65th).

With a total nominal capacity of about 6 million TEUs, the port Tanger Med 2, which will be opened in 2019, will bring the total capacity of the container terminals of Tanger Med complex to 9 million TEUs, making Tanger Med one of the most important transshipment hubs in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
