Tanzania Confirms that Moroccan Sahara Issue Exclusively Falls Within UN Security Council Responsibility
Tanzania stressed, on Saturday before the general debate of the 72nd UN General Assembly, that the issue of the Moroccan Sahara exclusively falls within the responsibility of the UN Security Council.
Speaking before the UN General Assembly, Tanzanian Foreign minister, Augustine Mahiga, said in this regard that "with the return of Morocco into the African Union fold, expectations are high in Africa so that negotiations on this issue, which is on the agenda of the Security Council will receive renewed momentum."
This statement is in line with the last Security Council resolution 2351 on the Moroccan Sahara of April 29, 2017. It confirms that the examination of the issue is a process that exclusively falls within the responsibility of the Security Council, secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, and his personal envoy, Horst Köhler.
It also stresses that negotiation is the only possible way to resolve the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, permanently burying the obsolete plans to which the other parties continue to cling desperately.
