HRH Princess Lalla Meryem Chairs in Rabat Ceremony to Celebrate IWD

HRH Princess Lalla Meryem, chairperson of the National Union of Moroccan Women (UNFM), chaired, on Friday at the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Rabat, a ceremony to celebrate the International Women's Day (IWD).

After reading Quran verses and playing the national anthem, the UNFM's anthem, composed on the occasion of celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the body, was played by students from the Rabat Mohammed V University.

Afterwards, president of the UNFM ethics committee Amina Oufroukh gave a speech, before Her Royal Highness, on behalf of the Union, wherein she recalled HRH Princess Lalla Meryem's guidelines to reinforce the body's initiatives in social justice, pursuant to the instructions of HM King Mohammed VI.

She also highlighted the Union's dialogue with civil society stakeholders to elaborate an action plan, based on several approaches mainly proximity, youth participation, diversification of partnerships and fostering the Union's status nationally and internationally.

Ahmed Abbadi, member of the UNFM ethics committee, gave a short presentation on a book in Arabic entitled "Memory Wealth: Promising Prospects", which celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the UNFM's inception.

HRH Princess Lalla Meryem signed, on this occasion, this reference and consultation book which will help preserve collective national memory, strengthen achievements related to women's empowerment and reflect upon future projects.

HRH Princess Lalla Meryem launched, later on, a new generation of three-disciplinary training centers (training, production, marketing), a project that aims to develop programs and activities connected to training, as well as the creation of new and innovative pedagogical programs in line with the needs of the labor market to motivate poor women, girls and young people aged 15 to 30.

The project will be implemented through 63 regional associations which will gradually join the project via the Union's 59 training centers.

Afterwards, Mohamed El Ghachi, president of the Academic Chair "Lalla Meryem for Women and Children", presented this body's action plan, created in accordance with the Royal Instructions and intended to address issues as violence against women, child brides and the protection of children in precarious situation.

Her Royal Highness was given details, by wali, national coordinator of the national initiative for human development (INDH) Mohamed Dardouri, on the the "Dar Al Korb" project, launched by the UNFM on March 8, 2018 as a community-based facility to promote the integration, attentiveness and development of social protection systems for the benefit of women and children.

The first pilot project carried out under this initiative, which will be generalized by the Union in the rest of the Kingdom's regions, is the "Dar Al Korb - Nzalet Laadam" (Province of Rhamna). The facility offers citizens social, medical, educational and legal services.

Subsequently, public prosecutor at the court of cassation Mohamed Abdennabaoui presented to HRH Princess Lalla Meryem a project to set up a drop in platform to assist and guide women and girls in distress. This 24/7 direct phone line is run by sociologists and psychologists who would direct the victims of abuse to the right department (public prosecutor, police, royal gendarmerie), and provide guidance in relation to employment, training, income-generating projects locally and regionally.

HRH Princess Lalla Meryem received, on this occasion, the representatives of several African women's associations, in the presence of ambassador, director of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI) Mohamed Metqal.

Afterwards, Chemsdha Alaoui Ismaili, President of the Regional Section of UNFM-Sale and Mohamed Dardouri presented to Her Royal Highness the initiatives undertaken by the said section, notably the development of community field "Al Hanae" in Sidi Abdellah neighborhood to practice female team sports and the purchase of school buses for the Ameur commune to fight school dropout. This initiative was given concrete substance under a partnership between the INDH and the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity.

At the end of the ceremony, HRH Princess Lalla Meryem posed for souvenir photos with participants in this celebration.
