HM King Mohammed VI laid, on Wednesday, the foundation stone of a new terminal at the Rabat-Sale airport and launched the first engine of the new generation of planes of Royal Air Maroc (Moroccan carrier-RAM), a newly-purchased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Totaling 1.641 billion dirhams, the airport's extension is a structuring project meant to back up the continuously-growing passenger traffic and the socio-economic development taking place in the Rabat-Sale-Kenitra region.

The project, which will increase the annual capacity of the airport to 4 million passengers instead of 1.5 million currently, is in line with the objectives of the flagship program "Rabat City of Light, Moroccan Capital of Culture" by reinforcing the city's tourism sector.

The new facility will also benefit the neighboring city of Kenitra as an industrial and employment platform hosting famous industrial groups.

An integral part of the development strategy of the National Airports Office (ONDA), the project will involve the building of a new terminal of a surface area of nearly 69,000 m2, the expansion of the aircraft parking (six additional spots), the development of access ramps and the construction of a two-level car park (1,300 parking lots).

To meet the needs of travelers, the future terminal will be equipped with cutting-edge technology in conformity with international standards in terms of security and service quality.

It will include a public hall with an area to exhibit plane models, a passenger and baggage check-in area, a screening area, a luggage delivery area, a passport check-in area at arrival and red and green circuits for customs control at arrival.

The future terminal will also include six telescopic boarding and disembarking bridges, a commercial gallery developed according to the new walkthrough concept, as well as catering and relaxation areas for passengers.

HM the King has, afterwards, launched the first engine of the new generation of planes of Royal Air Maroc (RAM), a newly-purchased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

On this occasion, RAM CEO Abdelhamid Addou handed the sovereign a symbolic gift.

The first of four Boeing 787-9 that were ordered by the national carrier, the 787-9 is an addition to the five 787-8 already operated by the RAM and will help serve new destinations and expand the company's network which already comprises over 90 destinations all over the world.

The 787-9 is a lengthened and strengthened variant with a 6.1m longer fuselage and a 24,700 kg higher maximum take-off weight, seating 280 passengers in a typical three-class arrangement over a 14,140 km range.
