Shanties eradication: HM the King launches in Mediouna Riad operation to rehouse 8,400 households

Worth over 1.1 billion dirhams, the "Riad" operation, undertaken by "Al Omrane" and "Idmaj Sakane" groups, is an integral part of the Greater Casablanca region shanty towns eradication program launched by the sovereign on Apr. 7, 2011.

The project, which stretches over a surface area of 175 hectares, falls within the framework of efforts made to improve living conditions of a large group of people, revive the prevention policy meant to contain the plague of shanties and embellish the metropolis' urban landscape.

The "Riad" operation, which spans 15 months, reflects the royal unwavering solicitude for disadvantaged social segments by enabling them to own a decent home and have a better living environment. It consists of developing and servicing 4,193 land plots to rehouse 8,386 shanty families, 1,009 land plots of social mix, 37 land plots for public equipment and three others to host trade activities.

This urban project will be funded by the Fund of solidarity, housing and urban integration, the beneficiaries, the revenue from selling the social mix plots of land and State's general budget (building of public equipment).

On the same occasion, HM the King handed symbolically, in the rural commune of Mejjatia Ouled Taleb (Mediouna province), award certificates to ten beneficiaries of the second phase of "Al Hamd" project which includes 532 land plots (1,064 households).

Launched by the sovereign on Dec. 20, 2011, this project, which seeks to rehouse at completion 3,434 shanty households in the region, is carried out in three phases, the first of which has already reached completion.

The "Al Hamd" project (316 mln MAD), carried out by Al Omrane group over a surface area of 50 hectares, concerns the development and servicing of 1,717 plots of land, 170 social mix plots of land, and 16 land plots for housing community-based public facilities and economic activities.

The second phase of the said project involves rehousing 650 El Menzeh, Bouaazza Ben Taibi and Boulahya shanty households, located in the prefecture of Sidi Bernoussi districts, and 414 'Carrières Centrales' shanty households (prefecture of Ain Sbâa – Hay Mohammadi districts).
