The 83rd Session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) concluded on Thursday with the review and adoption of the session’s report.
This session was marked by the Executive Committee’s approval of the draft agenda for the 47th Conference of the African Parliamentary Union and the confirmation of a previous decision, taken in N'Djamena, to hold the upcoming conference in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, between November and December 2025, on a date to be jointly agreed upon by the APU and the host country.
The agenda for the 84th session of the Executive Committee was also approved. It includes the review of the implementation of the decisions and recommendations of the Conference, the review and adoption of the action plan for 2026, the draft budget for the 2026 fiscal year, the approval of amendments to the APU’s statutes, and the review and adoption of the draft agendas for both the 48th Conference and the 85th session of the Executive Committee, along with determining the date and location for the latter session.
In her closing address, President of the Senate of Zimbabwe and Vice-President of the APU Executive Committee, Mabel Chinomona, emphasized that the session was characterized by a spirit of understanding. She noted that the APU is not merely an interparliamentary cooperation organization, but also a forum for calm dialogue and an exchange platform for views and experiences on the major challenges facing the African continent.
Chinomona also pointed out that all items on the agenda were addressed, including the review of activities carried out by the organization between the two sessions, the examination and approval of the operating budget and audit report for the 2024 fiscal year, preparations for the 47th Conference, the review and approval of proposed amendments to the Statutes, and the draft agenda, date, and venue of the 84th session of the Executive Committee.
She noted that amendments had been made to the Statutes and Rules of Procedure of the APU to strengthen the organization and called on all members to advocate within their respective national parliaments for the fulfillment of commitments made during the session.
Founded in Abidjan on February 13, 1976, the APU is a continental parliamentary organization. It currently includes 41 national parliaments and serves as a forum for dialogue and cooperation among national legislatures across the African continent.
The Union’s objectives are to strengthen African parliamentary action, promote peace, democracy, good governance, and sustainable development, and to foster communication among African parliamentarians as well as with their counterparts from other continents.
