Extension of Tariff Preferences to Products from Southern Provinces Had 'Positive Impact' on the Region’s Development

The extension of tariff preferences to products from the southern provinces of the Kingdom has had "a positive impact" on the region's development, says the European Parliament.
In a report published on its website explaining Monday's vote in the International Trade Committee (INTA) adopting the EU-Morocco agriculture agreement, the European Parliament points out that this measure from which the region benefited between 2013 and 2016 had had "a positive impact on the agriculture and fisheries sectors, on investment in infrastructure, health and education", noting that "the non-application of preferences would have negative effects".

The INTA Committee adopted, Monday evening, by an overwhelming majority the agriculture agreement between Morocco and the European Union (EU).

According to the European Parliament, the new tariffs provided for in this agreement would "significantly benefit local populations".

The decisive vote of the INTA Committee, which decides on substantive issues, is the final step at the level of the European Parliament's specialized committees before final adoption in plenary session, which is expected to take place next January.
