Japan's Stance on Sahara Dispute is 'Constant and Unchanged' (Ambassador)

Japan's ambassador to Morocco, Takuji Hanatani, stressed, on Thursday in Rabat, that his country's stance on the Sahara dispute is "constant and unchanged".

The diplomat, who was received by speaker of the House of Representatives, Habib El Malki, said that Japan has never and will never recognize the so-called sadr, adding that Tokyo has always supported the relevant Security Council resolutions.

Hanatani also noted that the puppet republic is not invited to meetings organized by his country within the framework of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development, unlike the 54 countries recognized at the international level as members of the African Union, according to a statement by the House of Representatives.

Morocco has great assets to attract Japanese investment, Hanatani said, recalling the presence of 68 Japanese companies in Morocco, which employ about 40,000 people in the local market.

For his part, El Malki highlighted Morocco’s efforts to reach a definitive solution to the artificial conflict over the Sahara, reiterating the commitment of the kingdom to the UN settlement process, adds the same source.

The United Nations remains the sole body responsible for this issue, he stressed, noting that the "origins of this conflict date back to the Cold War period".
