Minister of Foreign Affairs Meets with Burundian Counterpart

Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad Nasser Bourita held, on Monday, a meeting via teleconference with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation of the Republic of Burundi Albert Shingiro, within the framework of the excellent Moroccan-Burundian relations of solidarity and consultation.

During this meeting, the two ministers lauded bilateral relations, marked by fraternity and solidarity thanks to the insightful will of the Heads of State of the two brotherly countries, said a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad.

They also expressed their satisfaction with the fruitful results of the high-level visit exchanges and which will have to be reflected, eminently, by the official opening of a resident Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Burundi, said the same source.

The two parties also stressed the importance of further promoting regular political consultations on bilateral, regional and international issues of common interest, while welcoming the shared views on the various subjects that were discussed.

Strongly attached to the principle of respect for the sovereignty of States, the Burundian party reiterated its support for the initiatives of the UN Secretary General and of the Security Council as well as that of the Kingdom of Morocco that should lead to a final settlement of the dispute over the Sahara. It also reaffirmed its support for the exclusive role of the United Nations in reaching a lasting political solution to this dispute and for Decision 693 adopted by the AU Summit in Nouakchott in 2018.

Bourita and Shingiro also insisted on the importance of strengthening communication and coordination in the various multilateral platforms (AU, UN, etc.), in order to make the diplomatic actions, undertaken at the level of these bodies, more homogeneous with the official positions adopted by the two countries on different issues of common interest.

The two parties agreed to support their respective candidacies within regional and international organizations, of which Morocco and Burundi are members, the press release added.

They also expressed their determination to forge an ambitious partnership touching on many areas of cooperation, welcoming, in this regard, the adoption by the two countries of the cooperation roadmap covering the 2021-2024 period.

The two ministers stressed the importance of setting up a Morocco-Burundi Business Council in order to promote trade ties.
