The Arab World Institute (IMA) in Paris unveiled Wednesday evening the winners of its 2026 Design Awards, with Moroccan architect Salima Naji receiving the Grand Prix.
The Moroccan architect was a finalist in the competition, which highlights excellence in contemporary creation in the Arab world, with the Tiznit Heritage Interpretation Center, a project built using rammed earth within the city’s historic ramparts.
The project reflects her longstanding commitment to preserving and promoting Morocco’s architectural heritage.
Speaking to MAP during the awards ceremony, held in the presence of IMA President Anne-Claire Legendre, Salima Naji said she was "moved" to receive the prestigious award, which "recognizes 20 years of efforts." She described it in particular as recognition of her work on “heritage with a future-oriented approach.”
Based in Tiznit since 2008, Salima Naji studied architecture in Paris. She also earned a doctorate in social anthropology there, before completing postgraduate studies in aesthetics, arts and image technologies, followed by studies in philosophy of art.
A total of 26 projects were shortlisted for the fourth edition of the IMA Design Award, which, since its creation in 2023, has become an unmissable event of Paris Design Week, according to the Institute’s president.
The finalist projects, including those by four other Moroccan creators, are featured in an exhibition open to the public until September 20 at the IMA headquarters in Paris.
According to the organizers, the presence of five Moroccan creators among this edition’s finalists confirms the growing international profile of Moroccan creative work and recognition of its approach combining innovation, sustainability and cultural heritage.
Created by the Arab World Institute, the Design Award recognizes innovative achievements in design, architecture and crafts, while promoting the expertise and cultural identities of the Arab world.
