Morocco’s Government Council on Thursday approved a draft bill amending the law governing the status of professional journalists, as part of broader efforts to modernize the legal framework for the media sector.
The bill, No. 27.25, amends and supplements Law No. 89.13 and was presented by Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid. It aims to strengthen legal protections for journalists while aligning national legislation with Morocco’s constitutional guarantees on freedom of expression and its international human rights obligations, government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said at a press briefing following the meeting.
Baitas said the bill responds to profound shifts in the media landscape, seeking to adapt existing laws to current realities and reinforce press freedom while upholding professional ethics and the rule of law.
